Untitled (“Julie’s Demo”) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, December 11, 2002 Watercolor. Sophia noted on the foot of this painting “mainly Julie’s demo.” Julie was her painting instructor.
Sophia would admire the talents of her teacher and others in her class and always seem to sell herself short. When Sophia showed me this painting I thought it lacked something. The colors are nice, but there is something ordinary in its execution. Sophia did not agree with me and longed to be able to “paint with ease.”

Untitled Lion Painted by Sophia Ehrlich, November 2002, Watercolor. This is one of the first animals Sophia painted. Her first, was a great white shark, but this lion, it all his royal splendor or color and is the first mammal she painted. In 2005, she painted a lioness, “My Lioness.”

Untitled (Floral Study) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, September 2002 Watercolor. During her first year of watercolor painting Sophia’s subject was mainly flowers. This had more to do with what her instructor suggesting she paint than with Sophia’s interests. She admired her instructor’s talents, but it would not be too long before Sophia would break out of the beginner’s box and venture into very complication subjects like glass, fur and feathers, and complex portraits.

Untitled Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, May 2003, Watercolor. Sophia loved dogs. This painting is different from all her other animal paintings in that it reflects mischief. I do not recall any specific conversations with Sophia about this painting but as a dog lover and owner, she must have gotten a good chuckle while she painted this one.
