“Celloist” Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, July 9, 2003 Watercolor. Sophia loved many types of music including rock, country, opera, reggae, and rap. But she was especially fond of attending the symphony. She loved Shaggy, Pink, and often sang to me on the phone. While on home hospice on oxygen, I remember her cuddling me and my girls on her sofa and singing “Let’s get drunk and let’s get stupid” to cheer us. Sophia, herself, was a beautiful, even if sometimes complicated, song. … Continue…Celloist
Untitled (Woman Resting) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, June 2003 Watercolor. This is the second painting of a woman sleeping created by Sophia in June of 2003. The first, another untitled piece, was of a woman resting on a wall. … Continue…Untitled (Woman Resting)
Untitled (Repose) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, June 2003 Watercolor. Sophia called me after she finished this painting of a woman in repose. She was most excited about how the wall came out – a beautiful wash of subtle colors. Like many of her other women subjects in Sophia’s art, this women has red hair. … Continue…Repose
Sophia seemed to enjoy painting primates (as much as she loved painting them holding dogs.) Perhaps it was the human-like qualities she saw and was able to capture in their faces. … Continue…Maternal Puppy Love
“Sophia Singer Sargent” Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, May 2003 Watercolor. Sophia loved the works of John Singer Sargeant. She painted her own rendition of one of his paintings and playfully titled it, “Sophia Singer Sergent.” … Continue…Sophia Singer Sargent
Untitled Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, May 2003, Watercolor. Sophia loved dogs. This painting is different from all her other animal paintings in that it reflects mischief. I do not recall any specific conversations with Sophia about this painting but as a dog lover and owner, she must have gotten a good chuckle while she painted this one. … Continue…Untitled Watercolor, “Dog”
Untitled (Flowers) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, May 2003 Watercolor. Sophia mastered the art or floral watercolor paintings in 2002 (her first year of painting.) In 2003 she began to paint more animals and people, but occasionally returned to the basics to practice her washes. I think in this painting she was also working on painting glass and water – something she would master in only a few attempts. … Continue…Untitled (Flowers)
Untitled (Flowers In Blue Vase) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, March 2003 Watercolor. Sophia mastered the art or floral watercolor paintings in 2002 (her first year of painting.) In 2003 she began to paint more animals and people, but occasionally returned to the basics to practice her washes. … Continue…Untitled (Flowers In Blue Vase)
Untitled (Roses In Vase) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, March 2003 Watercolor. I love the composition in this floral painting with the fallen roses and water line. These were painted from a photograph of flowers that were sent to her. I wish I remembered something more Sophia may have told me about this painting. … Continue…Untitled (Roses In Vase)
“Bunny” March 2003 Watercolor by Sophia Ehrlich. Sophia loved this little bunny. She gifted me with the original, which I later sent back to her to frame and took a photocopy instead. It was not often that Sophia truly loved her work, but there was something about this bunny that she really connected with. … Continue…Bunny
“Harry” Sophia Ehrlich, March 2003 Watercolor This painting of Harry, Sophia’s white, standard poodle, is of a view outside her
“Water Goblet” Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, March 2003, Watercolor. This was Sophia’s first attempt to paint glass. She also painted a Waterford crystal statue equally as impressive. Then moved on to more complex animal and people portraits. Perhaps she was content with her uncanny innate ability to paint clear glass, but she did not paint any other still life pictures with glass after 2003. … Continue…Water Goblet
“Untitled” (Lady Smelling Roses) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, February 2003 Watercolor. This elegant painting reminds me of Sophia. She was a true lady and appreciated the little things in life, like to scent of flowers. Sophia told me she had fun painting the woman’s hair, especially the beads. … Continue…Untitled (Lady Smelling Roses)

“Elizabeth Rose” Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, December 2002, Watercolor. This is a portrait of Elizabeth Rose, Sophia’s granddaughter (and my daughter!) at age 3. Elizabeth is smelling tulips sent to her by Sophia. … Continue…Elizabeth Rose
Untitled (“Julie’s Demo”) Painting by Sophia Ehrlich, December 11, 2002 Watercolor. Sophia noted on the foot of this painting “mainly Julie’s demo.” Julie was her painting instructor.
Sophia would admire the talents of her teacher and others in her class and always seem to sell herself short. When Sophia showed me this painting I thought it lacked something. The colors are nice, but there is something ordinary in its execution. Sophia did not agree with me and longed to be able to “paint with ease.” … Continue…Untitled (Julie’s Demo)
Untitled (Flowers In Small Vase) Painting By Sophia Ehrlich, November 2002 Watercolor. Sophia loved painting in washes. She would tell me that paint was all about light and translucence. From the beginning, Sophia would play with paints to create deep, dark colors that through her masterful brush strokes still felt light and translucent. … Continue…Untitled (Flowers In Small Vase)
“Bird of Paradise” Painting By Sophia Ehrlich, November 2002 Watercolor. This is one of only two watercolor paintings where Sophia used a splatter brush technique. The second she also painted in November 2002, calling it simply, “Flower Study #2.” … Continue…Bird Of Paradise
