Civil Disobedience for Christians: A Cheat Sheet

Lawful and Peaceful Ways to Oppose Government Actions

Christians are called to obey God above all else (i.e., “But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29 (NKJV)).  And, as part of being obedient to God, the Bible specifically instructs us to submit to government authority — even if we disagree with or do not like the person(s) or office(s) of government.

However, secular systems of law do not always agree with those of God.  For this reason there are lawful and civil ways to disobey government actions that go against Christian beliefs.

Prayer

The very first thing a Believer should do when facing any problem is pray.  The Bible emphasizes the power of prayer repeatedly, showing how it serves as a direct line of communication with God. James 5:16 (NIV) states, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” This verse underlines the belief that prayer, when offered with a pure heart and righteous intent, can yield powerful results.

Writing to Representatives

Example: Drafting a letter or email to express concerns about unjust laws or policies.  Find Your Representative

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8-9 (NIV)

Peaceful Protest

Example: Participating in or organizing peaceful demonstrations.

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17 (NIV)

Legal Action

Example: Filing lawsuits to challenge unjust laws.

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Romans 13:1-2 (NIV)

Petitioning on Behalf of Others or for a Cause

Example: Gathering signatures to change or repeal unjust laws.

“Esther again pleaded with the king, falling at his feet and weeping. She begged him to put an end to the evil plan of Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.” Esther 8:3 (NIV)

Public Speaking

Example: Speaking at public forums or meetings to advocate for change.

“Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.'” Jeremiah 1:9-10 (NIV)

Christians can lawfully and civilly oppose government actions through various methods while adhering to biblical principles. By following these actions, they can ensure their disobedience is both respectful and impactful.
