Old Testament Prophecies

The Birth of Jesus

  • Prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 (NIV) “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
  • Fulfillment: Matthew 1:22-23 (NIV) “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’).”

The Crucifixion of Jesus

  • Prophecy: Psalm 22:16-18 (NIV) “Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.”
  • Fulfillment: John 19:23-24 (NIV) “When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. ‘Let’s not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let’s decide by lot who will get it.’ This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, ‘They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.’ So this is what the soldiers did.”

  • Prophecy: Psalm 16:10 (NIV) “because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”
  • Fulfillment: Acts 2:31 (NIV) “Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.”
