The Power of God Through Answered Prayer

The Importance of Prayer to Change an Outcome:  A Biblical Perspective

Prayer is a beautiful, profound and intimate act in the life of a believer; one that holds the power to change circumstances, influence outcomes, and transform lives.

The reason for the amazing power of prayer is because we have an ever-present God who not only listens, but answers prayer.  In fact, the Bible is filled with examples of how earnest and sincere prayer has led to divine intervention and miraculous changes.

The Bible also emphasizes the power of prayer repeatedly, showing how it serves as a direct line of communication with God. James 5:16 (NIV) states,

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

This verse underlines the belief that prayer, when offered with a pure heart and righteous intent, can yield powerful results.

The Role of Faith in Prayer

Faith is an essential component of prayer. Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) states,

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

This verse underscores the necessity of faith in establishing a meaningful connection with God through prayer.

Examples of The Power of God Through Answered Prayer

Hannah’s Prayer for a Child:  One of the most compelling stories of prayer changing an outcome is that of Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel. In 1 Samuel 1:10-11 (NIV), Hannah prays earnestly for a child,

“In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, ‘Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.'”

God hears her prayer, and she gives birth to Samuel, who becomes a significant figure in Israel’s history.

Hezekiah’s Prayer for Healing:  Another profound example is King Hezekiah’s prayer when he was ill. In 2 Kings 20:2-5 (NIV), Hezekiah turns to God in his time of need:

“Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, ‘Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.’ And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: ‘Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord.'”

Hezekiah’s heartfelt prayer results in God granting him an additional fifteen years of life.

Elijah’s Prayer for Rain:  The prophet Elijah’s prayer for rain is another striking instance of prayer affecting change. After a long drought, Elijah prays for rain in 1 Kings 18:42-45 (NIV):

“So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. ‘Go and look toward the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’ The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, “Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.”‘ Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling, and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.”

Elijah’s fervent prayer brings an end to the drought and restores the land’s fertility.

The Teachings of Jesus on Prayer

Jesus Christ, throughout His ministry, emphasized the importance of prayer and its ability to bring about change. In Matthew 21:22 (NIV), Jesus says,

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

This statement affirms the faith-based principle that prayer, when coupled with genuine belief, can lead to the fulfillment of one’s requests.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV), is a blueprint for effective prayer. Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, highlighting key elements such as reverence, submission to God’s will, petition for daily needs, forgiveness, and protection from evil. This prayer encapsulates the holistic nature of prayer and its role in seeking divine intervention.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

The Example of the Centurion

In Matthew 8:5-13 (NIV), the story of the centurion who seeks Jesus’ help for his servant exemplifies the power of faith in prayer. The centurion believes that Jesus can heal his servant with just a word, and Jesus responds,

“Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

The servant is healed that very moment, demonstrating how faith-infused prayer can lead to miraculous outcomes.

Please, Talk to God, Your Heavenly Father is Listening

Prayer is a transformative practice that holds the power to change outcomes, as evidenced by numerous accounts in the Bible. It is an act of faith, a demonstration of trust in God’s sovereignty, and a means of seeking His intervention in our lives.
